Global warming and The ANT Travelogue......

They were one of the dominant members of the Earth’s ecosystem about 100 million years ago. 50 million years ago, it hiked all the way from one place to another in search of some warmth. When Humans were not around, they were the Earth- dwelling species that turned and enriched the soil, even more then the earthworms. The creature in talk here is none other than ANTS. They made the soil fit for agriculture, predatory species of ants controlled insect pests and spider population as well as animal litter by devouring rotting carcasses. Other species dispersed seeds and domesticated aphids for food. But, a change in the environment 50 million years ago brought down the numbers of ANT population drastically. The only difference this time was that the climate change didn’t make the environment warmer but more cooler.
The scientists all over the World then collected data on fossilized remains of ants, the present climate, glacial history of sites and temperature change since the Ecocene period 50 million years ago. Thereby, emerged a global pattern on the biological diversity of ant communities.
There was sudden drop in temperature in the northern hemisphere which led to large extinction of the ant species in that particular area as the cooling effect was more pronounced in this hemisphere. As ants prefer warmer and dry areas, the population remained denser in southern hemisphere. The ground-foraging ants and the weaver ants particularly continued to thrive in southern hemisphere.
So the ants diversified most when the planet was warm and during the Ecocene era, the world was tropical and bubbling with ants. The WAO estimates that there are more than one billion ants born every minute. At this rate of population growth, there will be no more space for ants on this planet in future.

Climate change impacts us all; it did not spare one of the smallest creatures of Earth nor will it spare the mankind. It will hit the most vulnerable the hardest. Not so long ago we were happily ignorant of the trail of destruction in our wake. We polluted unknowingly and wasted gleefully. We mined, chopped and plundered enthusiastically. Then, from our plastic-wrapped bubble of carbon emissions, we looked proudly into the future and it didn’t look very good.
At the current level of climate change in an agriculture dominant economy like India, where agriculture is heavily dependent on monsoon, can soon lose its ability to feed a population which is estimated to increase by 500 million by 2050. Even the artificial measures to correct the lingering drought solution by infusing iodide sticks into the sky to seed clouds and hence causing artificial precipitation to make the soil moist, as done by China recently won’t be successful for long as everything done artificially comes at a price of other natural and valuable resources.

Protecting the most vulnerable will require the ingenuity and solidarity of every citizen. Through voluntary action, all of us can take responsibility for this big challenge and all our small actions can lead to big results.

Highways turning into parking lots?

Delhi’s traffic is taking a toll, an ugly turn. Everyone wants to own a car, or everyone is affluent and doing well to own one. There is no road sense prevailing in the city and the rush hour and peak hour traffic seem to last for the entire day. Life has become a menace on these roads.

The best way to conserve gas is to share the price with someone else. It’s our responsibility to abide by the traffic rules and regulations and see to that they come up with innovative solutions to tackle this menace “traffic” by carpooling.
One of the major benefits of carpooling is that it saves money. Owning a private vehicle, while very convenient, has many attached costs -- monthly payments, gasoline, oil changes and maintenance, parking, and insurance. Carpooling spreads those costs among several people instead of having one person shoulder the burden.
Carpooling takes more cars off the road. This might seem counterintuitive when companies place vehicles all over town, but it's true.

As you can probably imagine, the idea of fewer people sitting behind the wheel of a car has quite a benefits. For one, it helps reduce traffic congestion and wear and tear on the roads. Decreases air pollution and energy dependency. Furthermore, as time passes, people hope the level of urban carpooling will tip the scales so less parking infrastructure and road expansions will be needed. This could mean more resources reserved for developing parks and urban green spaces.

Formal carpooling is thought to have emerged in mid-1970s, likely due to the oil crisis at that time. It was a different sort of crisis back then and what we face now is far more serious. Our crisis isn't so much about politics or oil cartels; it's about resources that’s running out and one that plays a major role in global warming - oil.

Commonwealth Games are the new buzz for Delhi. It’s an international event and national pride for the capital of the country that is now witnessing a complete infrastructure make-over for it and keen of creating an indomitable history in making this event happen with grandeur and pride.
Commonwealth Games with pride and honor. The motive behind these projects will be to provide civic infrastructure of the international standards for the sportspersons and the tourists visiting India. Delhi Government is going all out for the beautification, city modernization and development of improvised public transport. There is frequent news about the modern development of Games village while significance is also laid on traffic management, security and health services to maintain congenial atmosphere in the city but still it’s not easy to cope with the traffic related problems in the city like Delhi, where the roads are so over burdened with the all time nonstop flow of traffic.
Hundreds of new vehicles are added to the city’s crowded streets daily. The total number of vehicles in Delhi is greater than Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai combined.
The terrible traffic situation and the negative impact it had on employee attrition rates.
All residents of city are feeling the brunt of traffic congestions, road rage and frustrating travel times. No amount of road widening and flyover constructions seems enough. The vehicular increase in India’s metros is greater than the population growth.
Over the past few years, we have seen a mushrooming of projects on public transport in Indian metros. This ought to be welcome news. However, as we are forced to make these choices in urban India, we need to take care that these are informed decisions, made with consideration of all consequences, direct and indirect.
The transformation of our cities will be driven largely by the decisions on transport and connectivity. Given that cities are poised to take dramatic decisions impacting the quality of life of us all, it is vital that we share the experiences of our mass transport birth pangs.
Cost - Effective transport network without installing expensive transportation where the tremendous rises in fuel prizes, alarming level of pollution, enormous parking hassles which will make your daily commutation experience a multi-level problem in itself.
The clock is ticking not just because of the Commonwealth Games. Delhi and other Indian cities have a pressing need to relieve growing traffic congestion. Streets are thronged with cars, auto-rickshaws, motorbikes, bicycles, buses, trucks etc. Traffic rules seem non-existent. Indeed, there are five fatal accidents daily in Delhi; buses are the main source of road accidents.
To ease the traffic problems we need a solution. The problem of traffic congestion will remain after the Games. one solution is to reduce the number of cars and where Mega carpool plays the effective role by using the limited cars and decreasing every possible traffic related problems which is the best opportunity to provide a practical and intelligent solution and Will be very engaging to see the pride capital of country responding to the international standards of sophistication, development, and beautification in all these projects. Everyone should car pool. With the increase in Delhi’s traffic, it has become a necessity. I am an environment freak and car-pooling is one way in which one could also reduce pollution. I don't car-pool because of the odd hours I work. I get into the office really early but if I would have been working at the normal office going hours then I definitely would have taken people along with me. A whole lot of my listeners are avid car poolers which is a good sign for Delhi considering the traffic congestion and pollution.

We've pushed hard for taxi pooling

We were in favour of taxi-pooling in the early 1970s when fuel prices soared. We'd suggested that instead of increasing the fare, taxi pooling should be encouraged. It never took off in the face of some stiff opposition from the government. Today, we are faced with a similar situation with fuel prices rising. Instead of passing the increased costs to commuters, it would be better to taxi-pool. The rules need to be amended. Even without an official taxi-pooling system many commuters pair up and hire taxis.

Our experience

Four of us colleagues would till two years ago drive down from Green Park to our office at the Cyber City, Gurgaon. It was a hateful drive for all of us. There was no knowing how long the journey would take anyway, given Delhi’s crazy traffic flow. It was boring, tedious, stressful and tiring. One day at lunch while we were discussing our plight, we figured how foolish we were to not car pool. From the very next day we car-pooled to work. It was a wonderful change.

We would chat all the way, switch the chore of driving between us on a weekly basis, and of course save on fuel. Six months ago we started using a dedicated King Long bus to get to work from Vasant Vihar. We still car pool to IIT from where the bus starts. You need to be a bunch of flexible people to car pool. For instance there are days when three of us have to wait for one who is working late. One of us may need to detour. One of us may be on a tour and miss our chance. All this we had to be good humoured about. Indians are way to egotistic to think on these terms.
